Our Focus Areas

The challenges and opportunities of aging are vast. Our focus is on the places where Battery Powered, operating with both urgency and trust, can make a difference in people's daily lives while also strengthening the systems and relationships that enable people to age well.

We believe the greatest leverage for our giving circle lies in the relationships that hold people up as they age—the trust between neighbors, the follow-through of a caregiver, the network that notices when someone goes quiet. That belief shapes our three focus areas:

Across all focus areas, we are guided by three values that serve as the standard against which every investment decision will be measured.

  • Respect: A life rich with experience and ongoing contribution, seen, valued, and engaged, not sidelined.
  • Dignity: The agency to make meaningful choices about one's own care and daily life, free from exploitation or condescension.
  • Belonging: Reversing elder isolation by investing in relationships and structures that weave generations together.

Our grantmaking recognizes both the challenges and the possibilities of longer lives. We will support proven organizations doing essential work today while also investing in promising new approaches that help older adults thrive.

Whether through direct service, community-building, advocacy, or systems change, we are interested in efforts that strengthen the conditions for aging with security, connection, purpose, and dignity. A well-timed investment can improve outcomes for individual people while helping to shape the systems that influence their lives.

Paths Not Taken. Biomedical research, medical care, and large-scale housing construction are the most prominent areas this cycle will not pursue. The capital required exceeds the scale of a giving circle, and these fields already command significant investment from government and industry.
