Moms First

It’s Time to Put Moms First

Model and Strategy

Moms First is a national organization seeking to transform our workplaces, our government and our culture to ensure that the over 40 million mothers in the United States thrive. Fueled by a growing nonpartisan, grassroots community of moms and a coalition of business leaders, Moms First works to expand access to affordable childcare so moms have choices when it comes to pursuing careers and having kids; deliver gender neutral paid leave so moms can recover from childbirth and bond with their babies without losing jobs or paycheck; and end the sexist motherhood penalty that undervalues moms’ labor and costs them hard earned money.

Moms First’s initial target is winning paid leave and affordable, accessible childcare for as many mothers as possible, in as many places as possible, by 2027 through:

Building private sector demand for child care. In the midst of a national child care crisis and a Congressional logjam, the private sector must lead by elevating child care as the business and economic issue it is. In 2022 Moms First launched the National Business Coalition for Child Care to dramatically scale the number of companies providing child care benefits to their employees. The Coalition brings together companies on the vanguard of solving the child care crisis and uses global platforms, like the World Economic Forum, to inspire corporate leadership, creates a community of practice to improve benefits offerings, and develops insights on the economic impact of this investment, both for companies and for our economy. By building private sector demand for child care, we expand access to child care for families today and build a community of business leaders who can advocate for public investment in the years ahead.

Growing a nonpartisan Moms Movement. Through digital community building and organizing, Moms First is expanding its national base of mothers and allies who are equipped to take meaningful actions in their own homes, workplaces, and communities. Moms First offers an authentic, supportive community with other moms committed to creating change, resources, like toolkits and trainings to advocate for gender neutral paid leave in the workplace, and advocacy opportunities to educate policymakers at the city, state and federal levels.

Accelerating cultural change. Through thought leadership, creative campaigns, and partnerships with cultural influencers, like the Duchess of Sussex and Lizzo, Moms First works to build respect and political capital for moms, keep the issues that affect moms at the forefront of national conversations, and connect the dots between supporting mothers, achieving women’s economic freedom, and ensuring a thriving economy.

The goal for 2023 is to grow the Coalition to more than 100 companies, providing more than 100,000 employees child care benefits.
Worked with the New York City Council to pass legislation creating a Marshall Plan for Moms Task Force, following Marshall Plan for Moms resolutions introduced in the House and Senate.
