Christy Turlington was born in California, and began her celebrated and internationally renowned modeling career at the age of 14. Over the course of her career she has appeared on over 500 magazine covers including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle, and been featured in advertising campaigns for designers including Calvin Klein, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and countless others. After suffering complications in her own 2003 childbirth, and upon learning that over 500,000 women die each year during childbirth, Turlington was inspired to pursue a Master's degree in Public Health at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. In 2005 Turlington began working with the international humanitarian organization CARE and has since become their Advocate for Maternal Health. She made her directorial debut on the 2010 documentary film No Woman, No Cry, which profiles the state of maternal health in four countries. Simultaneously, Turlington launched Every Mother Counts, a nonprofit that engages and mobilizes people and capital to support maternal and child health world-wide. At the 2015 New York marathon, 39,000 people joined Turlington in running for maternal health. She was named one of Glamour's Women of the Year in 2013, and one of Time's 100 Most Influential People of 2014.
