Model and Strategy
Headlands Center for the Arts (Headlands) and UC Berkeley Arts Research Center (ARC) act as incubators for creative process, advocating for the significant role that contemporary art plays in promoting empathy necessary to a diverse society.
The organizations will launch Incite (working title), a visionary ideas festival highlighting the Bay Area as a leading location for innovative thought and creativity. Incite will:
- Present groundbreaking projects by leading artists and thinkers
- Share the latest scientific and policy research on the arts & best practices for connecting the arts to civic planning, climate change and energy, and other projects of public good
- Amplify Headlands’ support of field-defining artists through its multi-disciplinary Artist in Residence (AIR) program, which has enriched the Bay Area for 35 years
- Create opportunities for discovery and test new models of community impact that will drive future public programs at Headlands, UC Berkeley, and elsewhere
Impact
The proposed project represents an important step towards Headlands’ longterm institutional goal of deepening its local, national, and international role in the arts by: increasing direct support for and promoting the work of artists who represent the brightest minds of the arts sector; and forming strategic partnerships that expand opportunities for audience engagement and programmatic capacity.
Through the Incite Festival, Headlands and ARC will lead the charge in attracting top makers, thinkers, and doers to the region. Envisioned as an annual destination event that identifies/defines/locates the Bay Area as a center for interdisciplinary projects that join arts and social issues, Incite will bring the region to the forefront of creative thought leadership by exporting the most compelling work of our time in engaging and innovative ways. Over the long term, Headlands and ARC also anticipate that Incite will generate increased direct and indirect support for working artists across the region, and inspire further collaboration across sectors.
