Model and Strategy
The Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) is a contemporary art museum whose mission is to celebrate Black cultures, ignite challenging conversations, and inspire learning through the global lens of the African Diaspora. MoAD is one of few museums dedicated to the celebration and interpretation of art, artists, and cultures from the African Diaspora.
Battery Powered support will contribute to the following three priority programs:
- The EMERGING ARTIST PROGRAM, a juried competition for a solo exhibition, which will support 8-10 additional Bay Area Black artists with solo shows, expanding the program to include studio space for the artists, mentorship, and professional development to prepare them for successful careers.
- The BLACK FOOD SUMMIT with Chef-in-Residence Bryant Terry, a multi-day event developed out of his groundbreaking forthcoming publication Black Food: Story, Art and Recipes from Across the African Diaspora. The final day of the Summit will consist of onsite visits to Black-led non-profits in the Bay Area focusing on sustainable farming and health practices.
- MoAD IN THE CLASSROOM will be increasing its reach, serving more schools and more grades. Currently the program reaches 41 local Title I public schools using an evidence-based visual literacy and cultural studies curriculum to inspire positive youth development. Currently designed for 3rd grade classrooms, MoAD in the classroom will be expanded to additional grades through middle school and even high school.
Impact
At a time when Bay Area artists, particularly artists of color are struggling, MoAD’s Emerging Artists Program has the potential to uplift and accelerate the careers of Black artists. The program has proven itself to be an incubator for Black artists at critical junctures in their careers with many going on to win major awards, secure gallery representation and exhibit broadly. These include Indira Allegra, winner of Museum of Art & Design’s 2019 Burke Prize; Angela Hennessy, winner of 2019 San Francisco Artadia Award; Andrew Wilson, 2018 Carr Center Independent Scholars Fellow; and Troy Chew, 2019 Tournesol Award Winner at Headlands Center for the Arts.
