SPUR

Building a Transformative Pro-Housing Movement

Model and Strategy

The purpose of this project is to help change the way people are talking about San Francisco's housing crisis in a fundamental way. Our current civic dialogue is full of fear, blame, fatalism and confusion about how to move forward. SPUR wants to reset the tone by bringing different voices to the conversation, elevating a sense of community and directing our audience to constructive solutions that they can help move forward. This project will grow a visible and active constituency for implementing housing solutions. There are many actions to remedy the causes of the housing crisis that are within our control in San Francisco. If we can build the civic will to put these ideas into practice, San Francisco could once again be a vibrant place we can all afford to share.

Impact

Create the civic will to move ahead on solutions for San Francisco's housing affordability crisis
Create a way to channel popular frustration and the love people feel for this city into a movement behind solutions
Build a communications and public engagement campaign capable of harnessing public energy around the housing crisis to change the conversation -- and to implement policy solutions
Launch an outreach campaign to engage participants representing a broad subset of San Franciscans in the creation of a series of video testimonials
Create a site that will also include housing analysis, offer policy solutions and provide avenues for visitors to learn, enter the dialogue and participate in action
Mobilize civic interest, build understanding of the issues and ultimately: galvanize people to support action for a more affordable city
