Model and Strategy
California’s water data systems are antiquated, isolated, and inaccessible, undermining their usefulness in helping
better manage California’s water. The Water Foundation is working to create a water information system that will
integrate water data and help drive sustainable water management especially in times of drought. By making
integrated information transparent and easily accessible, water and fisheries managers, as well as communities,
will be better able to make informed decisions. This will drive better allocation of resources, especially valuable
during more frequent periods of drought.
Impact
A better information system will support a viable statewide water market driven by science-based decision making
that would encourage conservation, sustain agriculture, identify and respond to communities with unsafe drinking
water, and facilitate private sector investments so that California is drought resilient.
