Unlocking Low-Income Access to Solar in California

Model and Strategy

Purpose: Create inclusive solar programs for low-income Californians. The U.S. is in the middle of an energy revolution as solar power—the world’s fastest growing energy source—puts more Americans in charge of their electricity choices. California, with its proud history of clean energy leadership, is leading this charge. However, there remains a need for comprehensive programs and regulations to address the specific financial, locational and market-gap barriers that prevent low-income consumers from going solar. In order to unleash solar’s vast potential, the hurdles that exist for low-income communities and communities of color must be addressed. Solar puts clean power in the hands of people who overwhelmingly support clean energy and climate progress. Unlocking access for approximately 1.9 m low-income households in California would expand the pool of consumers, which would both catalyze an acceleration in the clean energy revolution, and overall, build a stronger climate movement.

Impact

The longterm impacts for this project could be: * Inclusive solar programs are created that enable all Californians to choose to go solar, regardless of ability to site solar on their own property and socioeconomic status * Engagement and advocacy opportunities are created so that communities in California most impacted by the negative effects of fossil fuel consumption can actively participate in the green economy * Low-income families benefit from utility bill savings from solar * Growth in solar installations result in more clean energy jobs, improved public health, and reductions in GHG emissions which contribute to climate change
