Model and Strategy
Without the data to inform decision making, California’s farmers, businesses and cities are unprepared to manage
water scarcity. Lack of actionable information on water use and supply will continue to impede economic
development and threaten ecosystems. IH2O’s project aims to improve the quality of water management by
dismantling barriers to adoption of data solutions. A new water paradigm that harnesses Big Data can reward
farmers for doing more with less, enable utilities to cut waste and expand access for disadvantaged communities,
and mobilize the private sector to value water as a business risk. By supporting the testing and validation of high-impact
water technologies, IH2O will create economic opportunities for water entrepreneurs and incentivize
deployment by customers. IH2O’s pioneering innovation platform offers Californians practical solutions to
strengthen the resilience of water infrastructure today, and inspire tomorrow’s resource revolution.
Impact
Enabling data-driven water management decisions prepares California for future natural resource challenges. By
removing the barriers to testing and commercialization, IH2O’s project will equip California’s water users with high-impact
data solutions to navigate a resource-constrained world. Access to actionable water data is fundamental to
mitigating the risks of water scarcity, and will help utilities and businesses create value through cost savings and
operational efficiencies. Successful pilots that demonstrate these benefits will inspire others and further
disseminate new water technologies. As a market for water innovation emerges, the need for government or
philanthropic support will subside. Instead, scalable, market-tested solutions will sustain new collaborative efforts.
As witnessed in California’s energy sector, measurable gains in environmental impact will also translate into economic
opportunities for businesses exporting water technologies across the country and overseas. IH2O’s platform to
deploy data solutions will not only foster the next generation of water entrepreneurs, but will reaffirm California’s position
as a leader in the resource revolution.
