Model and Strategy
This project seeks to expand 10,000 Degrees college success model in San Francisco to support more students from low-income backgrounds to get to and through college, whether their journey begins at a two or four-year college.
We provide a targeted focus on community college because 44% of high school graduates from the San Francisco Unified School District are not eligible to attend a four-year college. For these students, community college is the only pathway to a baccalaureate degree.
Our college success program is delivered on high school and college campuses, and powered by our innovative Fellowship program (recent college graduates from low-income backgrounds, most of whom are alumni of 10,000 Degrees). Fellows are near-peer coaches and trained with deep content expertise to help students navigate life on and off campus. Our Fellows deliver cultural competence, helping students understand, navigate and manage the entire college success process and beyond. We never give up on students, and our Fellows are adept at increasing their level of support when students face academic or life challenges that could derail them from their goal of earning a college degree.
Impact
At 10,000 Degrees our theory of change is simple: dramatically increase the number of college graduates from low-income backgrounds and change the world. In partnership with SFUSD and City College of San Francisco, 10,000 Degrees will scale college support services for over 1,300 San Francisco youth by 2021, whether they begin their journey to a baccalaureate degree at a two-year or four-year college, in order to achieve greater economic equity and break the intergenerational cycle of poverty
10,000 Degrees intends to significantly expand our Fellowship program over the next four years to support more than 1,300 students from low-income backgrounds in San Francisco on their journey to a college degree. In addition, we would be able to provide thousands of additional students with college knowledge and financial aid workshops, growing a college-going and success culture throughout the high schools and colleges with whom we work
To this end, we are raising an additional $10 million dollars over the next four years to continue to expand our college success programming in San Francisco. This reflects growing from a $1.9 million budget in year one to a nearly $3 million budget in year four, including growth in scholarships granted from $770,000 in year one to $900,000 in year four. This funding would support the hiring of program staff and general programmatic costs as well as infrastructure, operational and development support to continue to grow our impact on college degree attainment rates in San Francisco.
