Model and Strategy
With our pledge to serving underserved transitional age youth, we are committed to addressing the mental health needs of those impacted by trauma. Our evidence-based treatments will help teens, young adults and families directly affected by trauma. But we won’t stop there. We see trauma from the perspective of population health, recognizing how trauma can be transmitted across generations, cultures, and throughout communities. Thus, we also develop treatments that address the needs of the network of people inevitably impacted when a loved one or community member experiences traumatic stress. This means close and extended family members, schools, organizations, and beyond.
By creating effective, culturally competent treatments and making them easily accessible, we will remove the stigma associated with seeking mental health care.
Impact
60.7% of teen and young adult males and 51.2% of teen and young adult females have experienced one or more traumatic events; within urban youth, these rates are even higher; and of those who experience trauma, 10% are diagnosed with PTSD.
Untreated PTSD and post traumatic stress reactions are correlated with increased levels of violence, broken relationships, family discord, underperformance, adverse health risk behaviors including drug and alcohol abuse, and a perpetuation of trauma across generations. Our trauma program brings healing at all levels, from the individual to the communities that connect us all.
