Model and Strategy
Mental health issues and high suicide rates are acute problems in the Bay Area. Schools, the news media, even our own personal social media news-feeds note this problem. And, Crisis Text Line data reflects this sad truth. Crisis Text Line is a direct service for all mental health issues, available 24/7, for free. We help people of all ages.
Impact
The Crisis Text Line data corpus has the volume, velocity, and variety to be extremely meaningful to external parties. The org has decided this data set should be open. Borrowing from the University of Michigan, they have established 3 levels of open data collaboration: Level One: General trends are available at CrisisTrends.org Level Two: Geographic and issue partners can utilize keywords that generate custom datasets. They have launched this with Atlanta, Chicago, as well as issue-specific organizations. Level Three: Message level data is available to researchers who submit proposals for non-commercial use and are approved by the Crisis Text Line Ethics Committee. Researchers can learn, for example, what is the relationship between weather patterns and depression? Crisis Text Line currently has the largest mental health data set in the world. Imagine how researchers, journalists, school board members, politicians, and police departments in the Bay Area might use this data?! Finally, their decisions will not be guided by political persuasion or anecdote, but by facts and trends.
