Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting

Stories that Catalyze Change

Model and Strategy

Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR) engages and empowers the public through accountability journalism and groundbreaking storytelling that sparks action, improves lives, and protects our democracy. We connect national, regional, and local news organizations together to tell the most important investigative stories and meet the information needs of diverse communities across the country. Success for CIR isn’t reaching all audiences, but engaging the right ones to hold power to account. In order to increase our impact this year, Battery Powered support will help us: - Produce nationally-relevant, multi-platform investigative projects that engage local communities and lead to impact. Our newsroom is focused on immigration, threats to democracy, criminal justice, climate and the environment, reproductive rights, and economic inequality. - Build on our successful model of nurturing investigative reporting nationally and locally, by equipping local journalists and outlets with investigative expertise and information, elevating local investigations to our national networks and platforms, and supporting local networks of journalists and organizations to further accountability reporting in their own communities. - Continue to build and diversify our audience. In 2022 we will launch Reveal Studios, an outlet for the development of ideas pitched by talented local and national journalists and newsrooms that allows them to tap into our expertise and experience in both audio and film production. - Invest in documentary and television production to ensure investigative journalism thrives in the streaming space. Building on recent successes — including an Academy-Award nominated co-production with Netflix and a series with Oxygen — we will continue to invest in documentary projects that result in significant public attention.

Impact

Our ongoing investigative series Behind the Smiles, which has produced dozens of localized stories through the Reveal Reporting Networks, exposed a serious injury crisis in Amazon’s warehouses. This investigation has delivered significant changes in safety protections for workers and inspired a wave of media coverage of workplace safety. In response to a groundbreaking report from Washington state regulators corroborating our findings, Amazon announced it would be overhauling one of its key productivity metrics. In California, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a new law that prohibits warehouse companies from enforcing unsafe work quotas or retaliating against whistleblowers. Furthermore, our recent report on Amazon’s data leaks published in collaboration with WIRED magazine, has led Congressional lawmakers to call for federal legislation on data privacy and an FTC investigation.
American Rehab, our first serial podcast, exposed how a treatment for drug addiction has turned tens of thousands of people into an unpaid, shadow workforce. This investigation sparked a federal lawsuit, a class-action lawsuit, and a Government Accountability Office investigation of federally-funded rehab facilities. The investigation continues through our Reporting Network, which has thus far identified at least 300 drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs in 44 states that required participants to work long hours without pay, in likely violation of labor law Our coverage won the 2020 Investigative Reporters and Editors medal, the 2021 Edward R. Murrow Award, and the 2021 Gerald Loeb Award.
