Model and Strategy
Mercy Housing is one of the largest developers of affordable housing in the country and currently has developed, owns and operates 11,000 housing units in California with another 4,000 units in development across the State.
Sunnydale is a 50-acre public housing site in San Francisco; the housing is in a severely distressed condition after decades of disinvestment. The San Francisco City & Housing Authority is funding Mercy Housing to redesign and rebuild 775 units of Sunnydale’s distressed public housing units as new homes for current Sunnydale families while also building 425 additional affordable homes and 500 new market-rate homes that can serve a range of family incomes. But Mercy Housing, as a nonprofit developer whose home is in San Francisco, has an opportunity and an obligation to go deeper in revitalizing this community.
Battery Powered support would help fund The Hub - the heart of the revitalized Sunnydale/ Visitacion Valley neighborhoods, creating spaces and programs where adults and children of different incomes, ethnicities and cultures come together to learn, play and grow. The Hub was designed based on extended research, including visits to 10 cities to understand how to create functional mixed-Income communities. The Hub will include a Boys & Girls Club, a child care and early childhood development center, a recreation center and gymnasium, a teaching kitchen, multipurpose rooms for events and classes, study spaces, community broadband and more. Private sources of funding are critical to make this Hub a reality.
Impact
With Sunnydale’s multi-generational poverty, physical isolation and disconnection from resources, new housing alone is not enough to transform this neighborhood into the economically and socially thriving community that residents aspire for it to be. Our core focus is on impacting the lives of young people as the future of the community. With high school graduation rates for Sunnydale residents at 51%, our youth-serving partners in The Hub will emphasize academic support, educational enrichment and career planning, with new staff positions focused on these priorities. Success will be measured by gains and improvements in youth educational outcomes, work readiness and overall well-being.
