Model and Strategy
Million Voters Project's (MVP) goal is to mobilize 1 million new and infrequent voters around an agenda of equity and inclusion. We do this by:
Expanding the Electorate:
There are over 7 million eligible, but unregistered, Californians and 5 million more that will likely stay home on election day. we're building 1-on-1 relationships with these voters through our 93 local partner organizations whose grassroots leaders engage their neighbors year round, not just during elections.
Winning Real Change:
No longer can we settle for empty promises or incremental change. MVP has a bold vision, starting with our first structural battle: Schools & Communities First is a 2020 ballot measure that will reclaim $11 billion for schools and local communities by closing a 40 year tax loophole that lets the wealthiest corporate landowners avoid paying their fair share.
Building a Powerful Movement:
Combined, the MVP partners have decades of expertise in voter outreach, organizing, and communications. We are building a movement that is in lock-step around a bold vision and sophisticated strategy. We build collective infrastructure, leverage our unique strengths, and align resources to maximize our impact.
Impact
MVP’s focus is on the communities suffering most from economic and social inequality (people of color, young people, immigrants, low-income residents), who also have low levels of voter participation. These voters are are critical to securing progressive victories, yet they are typically ignored by traditional campaigns. MVP’s local affiliates are rooted in these communities and build long-term relationships with voters on an ongoing basis – not just every 2 or 4 years – to involve them in local issue campaigns.
Right now, MVP affiliates are fanning out across the state to turn our neighbors out to vote in the November elections. But when the election is over, our real work begins: throughout the next 2 years, we will go back to our supportive voters to move them to action, to protect our communities from the Federal attacks and turn the tide of public opinion toward investment in our communities. By bringing people into the process beyond Election Day, we create the conditions to win a broader, bolder agenda.
By 2020, we hope to open the doors to a new 40-year legacy for California’s future—putting our state on the path towards restored funding for schools, and improving local libraries, parks, homelessness services, and emergency services. We will do this by turning out 1 Million Voters in the November 2020 election, which would represent a 10% Shift in the Electorate and a game-changer in terms of who decides California’s future. To reach this goal, we will talk to at least 2 million voters, identify 1.4 million supporters, and conduct a massive get-out-the-vote effort to get at least 1 million of our supporters to the polls.
We will never match our opposition’s resources dollar for dollar, but by expanding the electorate, we can prevail.
