Radio Bilingüe

¡Presente! Latino Voices, Votes and Impact - 2020 and Beyond

Model and Strategy

Radio Bilingüe (RB) will spark strong democratic engagement among low-income Latinos in the face of staggering new barriers introduced by the Coronavirus pandemic and economic crises that are already threatening hundreds of thousands in our audience. RB will bring Rapid Response public-radio-quality Spanish news and information to audiences bypassed by most media to promote informed decision making and civic action on the part of both citizen and non-citizen residents, who care deeply about the future of our nation, their communities and families, and demand inclusion. As the leading Latino non-commercial radio network and content producer in U.S. public media, RB’s journalists have played this role through every election and Census since 1984, and through the economic crisis that began in 2008 from which many in our audience never recovered. Programming will air on RB’s own 24 stations in California and the Southwest and by 75 affiliate stations across the U.S., stressing Latino voter awareness of urgent issues and candidates, challenges and solutions to voting rights and access, and myriad democratic functions being turned upside down by the pandemic including Census 2020.

Impact

Relief and supports to recover from the coronavirus and economic crises that threaten to lower their capacity to engage civically
Monitoring for new voter suppression and other anti-Democratic actions that seek to take advantage of the national crisis and divert attention of policy makers and the public
Voter registration, get-out-the-vote, court rulings on gerrymandering, laws improving voting procedures and expanding access
The 2020 elections including closely watched battles for control of the White House, Congress, state seats and governorships - and policies and recovery plans proposed and enacted by those elected
The effects of the Coronavirus crisis, economic downturn, health care and immigration on selected races around the country and communities afterwards
How Census 2020 is adapted to ensure an accurate count and analysis of the data, including by redistricting commissions
The growing power of Latino voters and how Latinos organize during these two years and beyond
