Faith In Action

LIVE FREE ROCS (Rebuilding Our Collective Strength)

Model and Strategy

LIVE FREE ROCS will register, educate and mobilize 1 million low-propensity and inactive voters from religious congregations, justice impacted families and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). To activate this existing infrastructure, we've built a new and groundbreaking tech tool, ROCS (Rebuilding Our Collective Strength), that centers urban voters of color, integrates up-to-date voter data, culturally relevant content and targeted voter engagement. ROCS is being built on AWS Pinpoint & integrating Amazon Lex, a natural language framework that reduces the amount of bot training traditionally associated with AI & chatbot programs. ROCS uses agile software practices to develop an effective “Most Viable Product”, built on open source code that can be applied & used long after the electoral campaign is over. This ROCS tool, coupled with ROCS Fellows from key states, will join ROCS 2020 Field Teams. These Fellows & Field Teams will lead monthly Voter Registration, Education & Mobilization virtual trainings & in-person activations fueled by issue based campaigns that activate voters who are passionate about gun violence, criminal justice reform, COVID-19 accountability & voter rights.

Impact

ROCS is an acronym that stands for Rebuilding Our Collective Strength. It is inspired by the "David and Goliath" speech delivered by Rev. Jesse Jackson in Philadelphia in 1984. In his speech he described how our victories and defeats are determined by the margin of despair and the fracture of our coalitions. For the past several years, we have been using metric driven data to inform our Religious Integrated Voter Engagement strategies. By defining our work in the numerical margins of voters that determine our victories or defeats in elections, we believe we can close this gap of voters and measure our impact along the way. We will use VAN data, A/B tested and targeted messages for low propensity voters and social media, P2P and other influencer driven content to increase the voter engagement in 2020 electoral cycle. We believe these voters being targeted will contribute in a record turnout of religious and millennial voters of color who support progressive issues. The ROCS tool will allow us to track our impact and determine how many voters we registered, how many took action to attend trainings and how many actually showed up to vote. ROCS will also allow us to continue work beyond Election Day and ensure democratic participation continues in off year elections so the muscle of civic engagement is not atrophied from election cycle to cycle.
