Communal Banking: An Integrated Campaign For Strengthening Communities In Rural Bolivia

Model and Strategy

UNICEF supports the Government of Bolivia to ensure the compliance to children’s and women’s rights by focusing on programmatic and policy responses to reduce disparities. The Communal Banks initiative prioritizes the most vulnerable population of this region by providing them opportunities to improve their living condition, which directly translates to better outcomes for children. Children in communities actively utilizing communal banks are more likely to attend school full time and nearly 100% of children whose households participate in Communal Banks have seen their conditions improved. This project will bolster UNICEF’s essential work addressing poverty in Bolivia through holistic programming that addresses both the symptoms of poverty and the root causes.

Impact

Fostering financial independence, higher rates of children in school (nearly 100% of children of involved families attend primary school), and better health outcomes.
Developing women leaders. Women who have led their community’s bank have moved into local government, helping to put women and children on the agenda.
Launching a 3-year plan to increase the capacity of the Community Banks with the intention of the project becoming self-sustaining.
