Model and Strategy
Research shows that women with strong land rights use their economic and social power in ways that help break cycles of poverty such as to boost family nutrition and support education. This innovative project relies on simple but powerful tools: educating girls about their rights to own and inherit land and educating communities to promote women’s access to secure land rights. Scaling this peer educator model in India has the potential to improve women’s land rights, nutrition, food security, and economic prospects around the world.
Impact
Scale activities piloted by Landesa in rural West Bengal, India, to reproduce results of girls being more likely to attend school; delay marriage; earn income; and hold economic assets, legal, and life skills knowledge.
Reduce girls’ vulnerabilities, improve their social and economic prospects as women, and develop government capacity to implement the approach across the remainder of the state’s 20 districts.
Girls will gain and apply knowledge of land rights and skills; create assets; increase access to legal and social services; and boost their perceived value.
