Believing In The Future: Livelihoods For Displaced Syrian Youth

Model and Strategy

The Syrian conflict has left a generation traumatized and isolated. Young people are anxious about their futures, and their options are limited. In Turkey, the Hatay province currently has the third highest population of Syrians in the country. Many reside in Reyhanli, where Syrians make up 50% of the town's population. There are very few opportunities for Syrian youth in the city, and most are looking for something that will give them hope, be it continuing their education or finding a decent job. The IRC established a Youth Center in Reyhanli in spring of 2014 to support Syrian youth and offer a chance for them to continue their educations, establish support networks and develop employable skills. The proposed project aims to expand existing efforts by IRC with a focus on providing opportunities and skills that support youth employability inside Turkey and, eventually, in Syria upon their return.

Impact

Increasing marketable skills among youth and income generating opportunities by supporting access to vocational training and apprenticeships, small business grants and short term employment opportunities.
Developing skills that will allow youth to better adapt to their new environment and access education opportunities.
Providing psychosocial support to youth, increasing self-esteem through life skills training, community networking and providing safe spaces.
