A Disruptive Social Enterprise Giving Kids In The DRC A Shot At Their 5th Birthdays

Model and Strategy

Asili, the Swahili word for “foundation”, is a disruptive and sustainable community-owned startup designed to create healthy, resilient, and economically empowered communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The American Refugee Committee (ARC) and IDEO.org partnered to develop an integrated and scalable delivery solution to decrease under-five mortality and poverty in the state of South Kivu. Asili offers a bundle of market-driven, social enterprises that dramatically improve access to clean water, income-generating activities and quality health care services that stimulate the local economy and are designed to be profitable within the first three years. Asili has demonstrated its ability to impact communities in South Kivu, and plans are in place to roll out additional zones to reach 50,000 individuals by 2017. This project will allow IDEO.org and ARC to test and build on the Asili model and create a plan for scale over the course of another year-long collaboration.

Impact

Deliver services to a population base of approximately 10,000 people in the first zone
Deliver additional services to approximately 40,000 people living below the poverty line by 2017
Operationalize the overall Asili business model in a way that is profitable and sustainable within three years and scalable to multiple zones and countries starting in 2018
Address the underlying causes of preventable diseases and reduce the rate of under-five mortality
