Literacy Lab

Leveraging Technology for Early Learners

Model and Strategy

Low-income children experience serious learning opportunity inequities during their early years, which can lead to lack of kinder-readiness and hinder future success. LitLab’s Interactive Learning model changes that trajectory by providing quality learning opportunities for children that caregivers can engage anywhere through use of mobile technology. The program focuses on key aspects of literacy, numeracy, and language development, while exponentially increasing access to learning content. It activates parents and caregivers to create interactive moments for their children that boost learning. An initial pilot combining parent supports + a tablet device + eBooks + learning apps + hardcover books + prompts + online exchanges, demonstrated that a child experiencing poverty can have 10x increased access to learning tools and literacy skills growth that makes them kinder-ready. Further build out of the learning platform will allow this disruptive solution to scale to more users.

Impact

LitLab’s Interactive Learning program has scaled 819% since the pilot launch in 2013. We are designing a parent/caregiver and educator platform with scale in mind so that we have capacity to indirectly serve every subsidized preschooler and transitional kindergartener in Oakland and increase our reach by 50% in all other regions we serve. This will mean adding online learning resources and workshops accessible by educators, service providers and parents. We will also Introduce an earned revenue model where all parents and early learning academic institutions have access to a replicable digital learning program. The initial scaling phase will will require build-out of the learning platform that can be device agnostic so that it can be supported on multiple Android platforms. Through our learning platform, by 2018, we will have the capacity to reach approximately 5,000 parents and caregivers. Through our Interactive Learning program activities we will directly serve approximately 1,400 children and 2,400 parents and caregivers within the next two-years.
