Global Conservation

Saving the Leuser Ecosystem – The Last Place on Earth

Model and Strategy

Global Conservation invites Battery Powered to join us to save the Leuser Ecosystem, The Last Place on Earth where tigers, rhinos, elephants, bear and orangutan exist together in the wild. Leuser Ecosystem is one of Asia’s largest intact forests – Asia’s Yellowstone. Our project focus is to protect the forests and wildlife of Leuser Ecosystem’s Bengkong Trumon Megafauna Sanctuary (BTMS), over 1 million acres of critical wildlife habitat for rhinos, elephant, tigers, bear and orangutans. The integral Kluet Peat Swamp is one of the three most important Orangutan sanctuaries in the world, and Upper Kluet Valley is one of the last places where Sumatran Rhino exist in the wild. Battery Powered funding of $200,000 will power one-half of our Global Park Defense PROTECT budget in Leuser Ecosystem for two (2) years including all needed critical systems, technology and training for four (4) SMART Ranger Patrols to fight against illegal logging, wildlife poaching and land clearing for illegal palm oil plantations.

Impact

Global Park Defense will protect the critically endangered Bengkung Trumon Megafauna Sanctuary (BTMS) deploying Global Park Defense methodology, systems and training for four (4) Ranger Teams. Building on our success there, Global Park Defense will be scaled up across Leuser Ecosystem, and deployed in 25 UNESCO World Heritage Parks over the next 10 years to protect the most important wildlife habitats, intact forests and marine ecosystems on Earth. The Battery Powered investment will secure protection for the critically important and endangered Bengkung Trumon Megafauna Sanctuary, while providing a model and ‘center of excellence’ for all other Leuser Ecosystem Ranger Teams – a total of fourteen (14), enabling protection of over 6 million acres - the Yellowstone of Asia. Global Conservation’s Impact in our Global Park Defense program can be measured using four (4) primary metrics: 1. Enforcement Progress: Increasing arrests, interdictions, prosecutions and patrolling effectiveness. Goal = Increase arrests by 200%; Patrolling coverage by 400%. 2. Forest and Wildlife Habitat: % Gain or Loss of most critical ecosystems. Goal = Zero loss of forests in BTMS. 3. Wildlife Populations: % Gain or Loss from baseline population analyses. Goal = Complete baseline population analysis within 2 years. 4. Community Benefits: New business, employment, tourism and health benefits (clean water, environmental services), less human-wildlife conflict and flooding. Goal = Employ over one hundred (100) local community members in park and forest patrolling and ecotourism.
