Captain Planet Foundation

International Youth Initiative to Take Action for the Ocean

Model and Strategy

Imagine the most potent ocean plastics youth warriors and scientists inspiring and coaching an army of youth to take actions that will affect single-use plastic policy and distribution in communities all over the globe. Produced in collaboration with Captain Planet Foundation, The 5Gyres Institute, UN Environment, OceanWise and Lonely Whale, the Ocean Heroes Bootcamp is an experiential training program designed to activate youth aged 11-18 with the scientific knowledge, campaign development tools, coaching, inspiration and the best-practice tool-kits needed to successfully launch their own campaigns to tackle single-use plastics within their communities. The inaugural Boot Camp will be held in New Orleans June 2 - 5, 2018 to coincide with World Environment Day (WED), an international UN celebration focused on marine litter. Participants will include 1,000 global youth, either in-person or via virtual classroom networks provided by Coastal Learning Centers and Ocean Wise. Post Boot Camp, youth will use the Ocean Heroes Quest on CPF’s project-based learning platform [Project Hero] to design, initiate, manage, and report on their campaign to solve local marine debris issues.

Impact

Plastic pollution is a crisis across cultures and continents. Following our 2018 Boot Camp launch, a new group of Squad Leaders will be selected for the 2019 Ocean Heroes Boot Camp – to grow the movement rapidly and exponentially year over year. We're focused on the collective impact of unleashing 1,000 trained youth activists every year to implement marine debris campaigns simultaneously, and in cooperation, across the globe. We can envision the noise of their social media campaigns – supported by a global collaborative of non-profit organizations and celebrity supporters. We anticipate three direct impact outcomes: 1) A direct and measurable reduction in single-use plastics resulting from youth-led, solutions-focused campaigns; 2) A messaging influence where youth are raising awareness about marine debris; and 3) A direct influence on the decisions of policy makers and corporate leaders who attend high level meetings such as the G7, Our Ocean Summit, the United Nations Environment Assembly, and other gatherings. Based on successes of our Squad Leaders and other youth activists, we anticipate greater than 50% of campaigns developed during the Summit will be implemented and a minimum of 25% of those will gain additional supporters and media attention in various global communities. The Summit will encourage youth to build winnable campaigns that focus [first] on easier to eliminate single-use plastic items such as the straw, balloons, derelict fishing gear and utensils. This will help them build early wins and momentum towards larger more impactful campaigns. The significance of this percentage of successful campaigns will be realized in the exponential growth of awareness of the issue of single-use plastic in areas of the world most significantly impacted.
