Model and Strategy
The Climate Reality Leadership Corps recruits, trains, and mobilizes climate advocates globally through our inclusive outreach, signature trainings, and engagement programs. Our purpose is to convene, seed, and support networks of climate activists fighting for a just solution to the climate crisis.
These networks include diverse voices, experiences, and perspectives, forming coalitions that expand beyond the “green choir.” Historically, the climate movement has overlooked the disproportionate health and extreme weather impacts on disadvantaged communities or saw it as a problem separate from emissions reductions. Negative outcomes experienced by marginalized communities are the result of systemic oppression, and all too often, the climate movement hasn't actively working to improve those systems.
Working together and collaborating through diverse coalitions, our networks of activists will galvanize the public support necessary to achieve the broad-scale political commitment and societal momentum for an equitable clean-energy future. We are helping transform the climate movement from one that’s addressing symptoms of systemic issues to one that’s addressing the root causes.
Impact
Through three virtual trainings in 2021, we will train 15,000 new Climate Reality Leaders and bring our Leadership Corps to over 46,000. We will support and add capacity to environmental justice groups through grants, and strengthen our US chapters and international branches. Finally, we will mobilize around strategic advocacy campaigns designed to push for a just transition to clean energy.
The direct impact of this work in 2021 and 2022 is clear: new activists from all walks of life will engage in collective action at a pivotal moment when climate justice is on the line. These activists will join a chorus of voices that together will push for just and equitable federal climate legislation in the US, and for raised ambition from the US and other countries at COP26 and beyond. For years, we have laid the groundwork for political will for climate action to rise up to meet the level of public support for solutions. Now, we are on the precipice of achieving support for green infrastructure policies, with a particular emphasis on securing funding for vulnerable communities, reducing emissions, and boosting the economy.
Our eyes are always on the long-term impact that we must achieve for the future of our planet: reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating opportunity for all communities to participate and thrive in a clean energy economy. In the US, we are building toward a just transition to 100 percent clean energy in the electricity sector by 2035 and net-zero emissions by 2050. Across the globe, we aim to drive increased awareness, ambition, and cooperation to reduce global emissions and hold temperature increase below 1.5 degrees centigrade.
We are at a critical moment for change and the Climate Reality Leadership Corps is poised to make a lasting impact.
