Model and Strategy
In 2021, young people are declaring an end to the era of fossil fuels. Future Coalition is joining together with other leading youth-led and adult-led climate justice groups to organize a multi-layered campaign to paralyze the fossil fuel industry by targeting all institutions who continue to enable it through financing and funding.
For too long, the fossil fuel industry along with banks, invested institutions, insurance companies, and more have stayed in the shadows while they’ve knowingly continued to fuel the climate crisis. This must end. Building off of the success of the youth climate justice movement over the last few years, this is a unifying and integrative campaign that will amplify and support the decentralized nature of the climate justice movement and kick off a new wave of grassroots and mainstream energy.
Impact
Our movement will create an environment where there are severe reputational, political, and economic costs to those who continue to enable the fossil fuel industry. We will go after each and every one of these targets to cut off all money funneled to fossil fuels, effectively paralyzing the industry.
By having a multitude of targets, we are making the movement accessible to the masses of ordinary citizens who understand the urgency of this crisis and want to be a part of the solution. We are building off the foundation of the many campaigns, efforts, research, and expertise which already exist - we are not reinventing the wheel. It’s time for the final push to end the financing of the destruction of our futures.
As we have in the past, we will focus on encouraging local coalition building, as well as working closely with promising, dedicated groups to grow their own capacity, both financial and technical. The campaign is a vehicle to train new organizers and strengthen the knowledge of existing leaders, and will enable us to continue to build supportive space for bold and creative visions.
Building off the success and lessons learned from the US Climate Strike Coalition, Future Coalition is structuring this campaign to empower a variety of organizations, both national and local, to have ownership over the work. The innovative approach we are taking will center and amplify the decentralized nature of the movement. The public face of the campaign will not be a national group or brand -- it will be the local groups doing the work on the ground and the young, Black, and Indigenous leaders on the frontlines. The public will know the movement not by one individual or one organization but by the vision of the future we’re trying to build.
