Samuel Getachew is a 15 year old poet, public speaker, student journalist, and community activist from Oakland, California. He is an editor for the long-standing student publication known as “The Scribe” Student Newspaper at Oakland Technical High School, where he is currently a sophomore, and has organized Islamophobia Awareness Presentations for several hundred of his high school peers. He is the 2017 Youth Speaks Teen Poetry Slam Grand Slam Champion and a member of the 2017 Bay Area team at Brave New Voices, the largest youth poetry competition in the world, where his team was ranked within the top 8 in the world. He has given speeches following speakers such as Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff as well as performed original poetry at events for Teach for America, the Ecology Center, Salesforce, and the Philanthropist’s Forum as well as contributed to Pop Up Magazine’s shows and had his poetry distributed across shows in several major cities, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City.
