Model and Strategy
The Return Project, which includes a feature documentary, encompasses a long-term campaign aimed at accelerating the outcomes of key criminal justice reforms. This project seeks to influence the reduction of mass incarceration, passage of sentencing reform, and the development of healthy alternatives to serving long prison sentences.
The Return uses stories from families impacted by incarceration to highlight the significance of Proposition 36, which amended the Three Strikes Law, one of the harshest sentencing laws in the nation. The film draws on the voices of prisoners suddenly released, judges and attorneys, and re-entry providers on the front lines of this unprecedented sentencing reform. The feature documentary will be completed in 2015 and will broadcast nationally on PBS. It will include a screening tour designed to engage key grassroots audiences, legislators and policy groups driving change.
Impact
Bolster engagement via social media, the number of festival, educational and community screenings, the number of national broadcast and subsequent in-person and online screenings.
Drive memberships to a coalition of partner organizations and increase discussion of ongoing reforms through panel discussions and other events.
Increase the number of businesses willing to “ban the box” and the number of businesses willing to hire formerly incarcerated people.
