Model and Strategy
Education, Defense & Justice for Youth (EDJY) seeks to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline. EDJY removes barriers to education and employment by combating the interconnected legal problems facing at-risk youth: harsh school discipline policies, unstable housing, immigration issues, the impossibility of paying court fees and restitution, onerous probation terms, and inability to get a job because of a juvenile record.
Capitalizing on the passion of UC Berkeley law and social work students, the multidisciplinary expertise of its lawyers, and strong bonds with community diversion programs, East Bay Community Law Center is changing the law from a barrier to a bridge. EDJY is the first project of its kind to help young adults avoid detention, put school and employment within reach, and inspire future lawyers to revolutionize legal advocacy for youth.
