Justice Advocates: Helping Exonerees Reform The Criminal Justice System

Model and Strategy

The Justice Advocates project recruits, trains and organizes speaking events for the wrongfully convicted in order to counter apathy with empathy and highlighting the need to reform the criminal justice system. Through this initiative, exonerees develop social and organization skills and receive compensation for telling their story. They help to change the hearts and minds of many more people, with the ultimate goal of abolishing capital punishment in California. Abolition would save the state almost $200 million a year—money that could be used for programs that prevent crime and break the cycle of incarceration. Justice Advocates employs and supports exonerees who have been punished for crimes they did not commit and who still face obstacles after being freed from prison.

Impact

Increase the number of Justice Advocates to 10 (or more), provide speech and PR training, and schedule speaking and advocacy opportunities for them across California.
