Good Food Movement
Battery Powered members dug into a delicious conversation at Expert Night for our fall theme - the Future of Food. Our community is exploring this theme through the question - what will it take to shift food systems towards greater sustainability, security, and equity? We learned in our Issue Brief the world’s food systems account for an estimated one-third of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, and are a primary driver of biodiversity loss and land degradation. Our current trajectory is not sustainable, nor equitable, and it's time to commit to new ways of growing both on and off the farm.
At Expert Night we had an all-female group of experts tell us how food systems became what they are today but also what we can change. Our panelists included Dr. Cynthia Daley, Mariela Cedeño, Larissa Zimberoff, and Nina Ichikawa. Executive Director of the Berkeley Food Institute, Nina, started us off with a special presentation mentioning, "the Bay Area is a world hub for food systems and we have the responsibility to be part of the leading edge". This brought to our attention the importance of solutions like regenerative agriculture; land ownership for farmers, especially those who have been historically marginalized from owning land; food technologies; stronger connections with the communities who produce our food; and so much more. The discussion led us to consider how our families participate in the food systems and how our participation can better cultivate local economies and encourage resilient food systems.
Our panelists covered a lot of ground and left us feeling inspired to support solutions. Click HERE to watch the recording of the event.
