Battery Powered Awards $1.28 million to Opportunity Youth

The Battery Powered community awarded $1.28 million to organizations supporting the Bay Area's most vulnerable youth to thrive.

An estimated 80,000 teenagers and young adults in the Bay Area are neither working nor enrolled in an educational institution. And many more are at high risk of joining this statistic, particularly youth involved in the foster care or juvenile justice systems. Disconnection sets them up for a lifetime of poor outcomes from health to income.  But, when we invest in these youth, we realize the potential that can be achieved when all youth succeed.  The Battery Powered community set out to support organizations doing just that.  We are pleased to introduce the recipients of a Battery Powered award under our Opportunity Youth theme:

10,000 Degrees $149,700 to help double the number of low-income students they serve to get to and through college so as to achieve economic equity and break the cycle of intergenerational poverty.

First Place for Youth $174,600 to reach an additional 135 opportunity youth in the foster care system with housing and wrap-around services in three Bay Area counties.

Life Learning Academy $250,000 to support on-site housing at this SFUSD public charter school which is providing a non-violent community for academic, vocational and social skill building for students who are not succeeding in a traditional school.

New Door Ventures $250,000 to expand their successful workforce development program for youth in San Francisco to the East Bay.

San Francisco Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) $192,000 to help them scale toward a goal of providing a court-appointed special advocate to every foster youth in need in San Francisco.

Young Women's Freedom Center $206,200 to train and place systems-involved young women and transgender or non-conforming youth in meaningful nonprofit employment.

Additionally, grants of $10,000 were made to each of the following organizations: Beyond Emancipation, National Center for Youth Law, Pivotal, RYSE, Teen Success Inc, and YR Media.
