A Renaissance in Journalism

A Renaissance in Journalism

What if we were to tell you that we are living through a renaissance in journalism? It might be hard to believe when more than 2100 newspapers have closed in the past 15 years; when half of journalism jobs have been lost in the same time; when 200 counties across the country live in a news desert with no credible source of local news.  But a flowering of independent, high quality, non profit journalism and media outlets, and organizations supporting them, are meeting the urgency to rebuild and reinvent the free press.

At Organization Night for our winter 2022 theme on Journalism & the Media, we met 10 of these organizations.  From local news coverage of the East Bay to investigative journalism focused on the criminal justice system, from legal representation for journalists to building a new pipeline of young storytellers of color, our finalists shared how their work is creating a vibrant, diverse ecosystem of quality news and information.

If you didn’t get a chance to join us, you can catch a recording of the evening HERE. And you can find profiles of each organization HERE.
