Battery Powered Awards $1.27 Million to a Healthy Democracy
This week, our country grappled with what has been true for a very long time - racial inequity and discrimination are pervasive throughout our society. At Battery Powered, we are heartened to see the attention being paid, but heart broken at what it has taken to awaken our society to these truths.
During the past three months, our community has focused on how to make our democracy more inclusive and equitable. And while not the stated intention of the Healthy Demoracy theme when our members selected it many months ago, we believe this is part of the solution to the deep racial inequities that exist across all facets of our society.
We are pleased to announce that the Battery Powered community awarded $1.27 million to organizations empowering all people to participate in our democracy. The recipients of a Battery Powered award under our Healthy Democracy 2020 theme are:
Alliance for Youth Organizing ($239,239) to support a national network of youth focused organizations that are leading Democracy Done Right campaigns to advance pro voter reforms at the state level.
Brennan Center for Justice ($300,000) to advance vital election reforms that will protect against threats to our democracy from foreign interference and challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Democracy Works ($250,000) to make voting a simple and seamless experience, particularly for new, young and disabled voters, toward a goal of 80% voter turnout by 2024
DoSomething.org ($200,783) to turn volunteers into voters and mobilize the highest youth turn out in history for the 2020 election and beyond.
Vote Run Lead ($197,047) to train women across the U.S. to run for and win state house and senate seats with the goal of majority-women state legislatures in all 50 states.
Additionally, grants of $10,000 were made to each of the following organizations: Campaign Legal Center, Center for Tech & Civic Life, Radio Bilingüe, Represent.Us, Solutions Journalism Network, and The GroundTruth Project. And a grant of $22,000 was made to Faith in Action.
