Battery Powered Makes Awards of $1.39 Million to Childhood Nutrition

The Battery Powered community collectively awarded $1.39 million to programs that are nourishing Bay Area children so they can thrive at school and beyond.

There is no one solution to solving food insecurity and ensuring a nutritious, sufficient, delicious diet for all our young people in the Bay Area. It takes schools and grocery stores, hospitals and food banks, procurement reform and policy change, technology and gardens. By supporting six exemplary organizations, each addressing a different part of the challenge, we aim to meet the challenge that Alice Waters laid out for us at Expert Night – to ignite “a delicious revolution”!

We are pleased to introduce the recipients of a Battery Powered award under our Childhood Nutrition theme:

Center for Good Food Purchasing $250,000 to leverage over $20 million of food purchased by Bay Area school districts to ensure that procurement aligns with community values, and students have access to healthy food in school.

Code for America $250,000 to increase access to food benefits through GetCalFresh, the nation’s first mobile application for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This funding will allow the program to reach Napa, the last county in the Bay Area not currently served by GetCalFresh.

Education Outside $238,000 to expand access to an innovative school garden program for under-resourced K-5 students in East Palo Alto and Redwood City so they develop a passion for healthy eating, science and sustainability.

Food as Medicine Coalition $213,000 (at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland) to test a novel program wherein doctors prescribe home deliveries of healthy food from local farms to families who are food insecure and in need of better nutrition.

No Kid Hungry California $250,000 to ensure kids start their day with a healthy breakfast through their model that brings breakfast into the classroom after the bell ensuring dignity and access for all kids. This grant will support them in reaching 75-85 schools in Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco counties.

REAL Food in Schools Collaborative $189,000 to integrate hands-on garden, nutrition and cooking education and REAL Certified healthy school food to support lifelong wellness and achievement for students in Mt. Diablo Unified School District.
