Battery Powered Awards $875,110 to Bay Area's Future
We are excited to announce that the Battery Powered community awarded $875,110 to organizations that are ensuring the Bay Area is a place of beauty, belonging and opportunity for all as part of our fall 2021 theme on The Bay Area's Future.
Over the past four months, the Battery Powered community contemplated which sectors were particularly hard hit by the pandemic and are crucial to the vibrancy of our communities and neighborhoods. We learned about the brilliant array of artists, culture keepers, and arts and cultural institutions that exhilarate us, create community, and contribute hundreds of millions of dollars to our economy; the small businesses and entrepreneurs who make our neighborhoods vibrant, not generic and employ nearly half of all private sector employees in California; and the activists and organizers who are ensuring the voices of those who are disproportionately impacted by realities like lack of affordable housing, income inequality, and holes in the safety net have a voice in the policies and solutions that affect them. Our grantmaking focused on those three areas and we are pleased to announce our grantees:
Children's Council of San Francisco $250,000 to support home-based child care businesses to launch and grow in San Francisco and to mobilize parents and educators to advocate for government investment to rebuild the child care industry in a more sustainable and equitable way.
RUNWAY $197,976 to provide financing, holistic business support, and innovative financial products to Black founders in the Bay Area, and shift practices within financial institutions towards more equitable outcomes.
Headlands Center for the Arts $133,088 to support the creative practice of artists, collectives, and cultural practitioners from the Bay Area and beyond through residencies, fellowships, cash awards, and community-based projects.
Pacific Community Ventures $234,045 to offer restorative “loan + advice” capital to more entrepreneurs of color in the Bay Area and to promote worker well-being and wealth-building outcomes for a more inclusive recovery ahead.
Additionally, grants of $10,000 were made to the following exceptional organizations: Bay Rising, Black Cultural Zone Community Development Corporation, Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD), San Francisco Cultural Districts Collaborative, Shotgun Players, and The Kelsey.
