Battery Powered Awards $1.31 Million to Addiction & Recovery
The Battery Powered community awarded $1.31 million to organizations helping people and communities affected by drug addiction to be safer and healthier.
More than 7 million Americans struggle with an illicit drug-related substance use disorder. Throw alcohol into the mix and the number rises to 18.7 million adults. Americans are now more likely to die of an opioid overdose than a car crash. The U.S. Surgeon General recently called for a change in the way we approach drug addiction in this country, including reliance on evidence-based strategies instead of outdated approaches based on morality and “abstinence or nothing”. We agree. The Battery Powered community set out to support organizations doing just that. We are pleased to introduce the recipients of a Battery Powered award under our Addiction & Recovery theme:
California Bridge Program $250,000 to transform substance use treatment in California by enabling people with addiction to get help, day or night, in the nearest emergency room.
Heffter Research Institute $239,700 to conduct 3 pilot studies of opioid use disorder with psychedelics - leading to proof of concept trials.
National Advocates for Pregnant Women $250,000 to advance the health and safety of pregnant and parenting women who are targeted for punitive drug policies that stigmatize and undermine treatment and recovery.
The Phoenix $250,000 to expand their sober active community to the San Francisco Bay Area to support people in recovery and reduce stigma through a network of peer support, fitness, and social activities.
Young People in Recovery $250,000 to help young people in recovery thrive and reach their full potential by helping them find peer support and resources like housing, education, and employment.
Additionally, grants of $10,000 were made to each of the following organizations: Drug Policy Alliance, Harm Reduction Coalition, HealthRIGHT360, HIV Education and Prevention Project of Alameda County (HEPPAC), PRC, San Francisco AIDS Foundation, San Francisco Drug Users' Union.
